Tutorial H01: Integrated ProcessImprovement using the FAA Integrated Capability Maturity Model (FAA-iCMM )

Description:

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has developed an integrated CapabilityMaturity Modelsm for the acquisition of software intensive systems. This model, known asthe FAA-iCMMâ , integrates the Systems Engineering Capability Maturity Model (SE-CMMv1.1), the Software Acquisition CMM (SA-CMM v1.01) and the CMM for Software (SW-CMM v1.1).The FAA-iCMM is guiding the improvement of FAA-wide processes used to manage, acquire, andengineer software intensive systems. The model is appropriate for consideration by anyorganization seeking guidance for improving systems engineering, software engineering, management, and acquisition processes in an integrated way.

This tutorial describes the FAA's process improvement environment, why the FAA-iCMM wasconstructed, and the CMM integration strategy used. The model is presented including itsarchitecture, domain, capability levels, maturity levels, and appraisal method. Lessonslearned from pursuing integrated process improvement will be discussed.

Intended Audience:

People interested in or working on process improvement in organizations where

Class Size: Limited to 30 participants.

Instructor:

Dr. Linda Ibrahim is the process improvement lead atthe Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). She chairs the FAA Corporate SoftwareEngineering Process Group (SEPG) and she is the Project Leader, architect, and lead authoron the FAA’s CMM Integration Project (the FAA-iCMM project). She is a member of theSteering Group for the government-industry-SEI CMM Integration (CMMI) effort. Linda hasbeen working in software engineering for more than 30 years. She was a Senior Member ofthe Technical Staff for several years at the Software Engineering Institute, and otherprevious employers include corporations, universities, governments, and research centersin the US, Europe, and the Middle East. Linda holds a BA in Mathematics (Duke U.), MS inInformation Science, and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering (U. of Hawaii). She is a memberof IEEE, IEEE Computer Society, INCOSE, and ACM.
