Message From the Technical Chair

The UK Chapter of INCOSE is proud to host the Ninth Annual Symposium, for the first time in Europe. The entire INCOSE ‘99 Symposium programme has been thoughtfully designed to reinforce the conference theme of "Systems Engineering: Sharing the Future" . This will be the largest international systems engineering event ever planned , with:
  • thought-provoking papers;
  • up-to-the minute briefings and hot topics;
  • a wide choice of tutorials;
  • information on the latest tools and techniques.

But INCOSE ’99 will also be different - a new continent, fresh and challenging perspectives, together with strong coverage of emerging issues, particularly with other disciplines. All activities will reinforce the conference theme of "Systems Engineer-ing: Sharing the Future" . They will contribute to the largest Systems Engineering event ever planned, with 7 parallel tracks and 56 sessions, containing 165 papers and 13 Panels, Briefings and Workshops. The formal technical programme has been structured to meet the professional needs of many diverse interests. Additionally, there will be 18 optional tutorials to choose from, poster paper sessions, an academic and other workshops, Working and Interest Group meetings, four keynote speakers, informal "fringe" activities, plus one or two surprises - the list is endless!

The INCOSE ‘99 theme "Systems Engineering: Sharing the Future" seeks to exploit the confluence and synergy that we are now seeing among the various key issues being addressed by INCOSE world-wide. You are invited to come and to:

  • ‘Share the Future’ in the challenges of the increasing breadth of applications, the diversity of techniques and the overlap and differences that systems engineering has with other disciplines;
  • ‘Share the Future’ by learning and responding to the opportunities for development and application of systems engineering principles across diverse domains of application;
  • ‘Share the Future’ against a backdrop of international issues, industrial and academic alliances, relationships with other disciplines and professional bodies, and between industries;
  • ‘Share the Future’ in the final year of the millennium, a future inevitably characterised by the dynamic of ‘sharing’ - where the diverse interests of stakeholders can be brought together to mutual benefit when a systems approach is used;
  • ‘Share the Future’ and be stimulated by the fruitful combination of well-established topics and emerging areas of interest that are identified in the detailed programme schedule.

It’s been a privilege to work as part of the International team putting this event together under the banner – the same, but different! I hope you’ll agree with me that all of this is going to be just too good to miss!
