The Human Factors National Advisory Committee (HF NAC) of the Foresight Defence and Aerospace and Systems Panel, invites anyone who has an interest in research and development into human issues associated with technology-based products or processes, to a symposium on 21st March 2002.
The HFNAC was established in 1999 to provide advice to government on national priorities for Human Factors research in the Defence and Aerospace industries. Work in the first year sought to understand the UK's capability in Human Factors. A
symposium early in 2001 produced contributions to the work from a wide range of interested parties.
During 2001, the NAC has concentrated on developing recommendations of where UK defence and aerospace industry believes the priorities for national R&D spending should lie. These are already influencing the Department of Trade & Industry, Engineering and Physical Science Research Council and the Ministry of Defence.
Work of the NAC in 2001 has sought to identify trends influencing the future market place for the UK defence and aerospace industries. A sub-committee has prepared a working paper on Protection and Survivability and work to develop a Taxonomy of Human Factors topics has progressed.
The objectives of the 2002 symposium are:
The symposium will comprise a combination of presentations and discussion groups.
The NAC is particularly keen to encourage the academic community to become more involved in applied Human Factors research. As well as presentations about the work of the committee, Professor Vicki Bruce, chair of the Psychology Panel for RAE 2001, will explain the role of applied research in the Research Assessment Exercise.
Participation is free of charge, (though there may be a small charge for a buffet lunch) however places are limited. If you would like to register an interest in attending the symposium, please contact Judith Ramsay, at Nickleby HFE Ltd.
The Foresight HFNAC Symposium is supported by the Department of Trade and Industry, the Health and Safety Executive and the Ministry of Defence.
